The world ICT market in 2006 The demand for ICT products, solutions and services has benefitted from the significant growth of the global economy, and from the positive impact of global spending on investment and consumption levels among the industrialised countries, as well as on the increase in the number of individual users and businesses in emerging countries. The global telecommunications market exceeded 1,662 billion dollars in 2006 with a slight decline in growth figures with respect to 2005 which showed an increase of 6.5% (fig. 4).
The world IT market in 2006 In 2006 the IT market had its best year since 2001 having grown at a rate of 6.1% and reaching 1,073.4 billion dollars in value, thus consolidating the economic recovery which started in 2002 (fig. 6).
In 2006, the telecommunications market in Europe showed similar growth rates to the previous year with an increase of just over 20 billion Euros bringing the total value for the market to 455 billion Euros (fig. 8).
The positive trend of all the macroeconomic variables, from investment to spending and exports, in all European countries has had positive effects on the demand for IT which grew by 3.9% in 2006 as against 3.5% in 2005.
Throughout 2006 all major European markets continued the enduring trend that sees channels providing general entertainment content progressively lose audience shares in favour of theme channels that are provided for free or on a pay per use basis through multichannel platforms.
The ICT market in 2006 Growth in the Italian ICT market in 2006 was attributable to different factors compared to previous years when the driving element was primarily the growth in telecommunications as opposed to the less positive performances of the IT market.
In an attempt to identify a single determining characteristic in the efforts made by the Italian telecommunications sector to innovate business throughout 2006, the keyword would definitely be “convergence”.
The Italian IT market in 2006 In all major countries, including Italy, the IT market grew at a faster rate than in 2005, although Italy has accumulated a gap of 2.3 points compared to the European average. This figure must not however be seen solely under a pessimistic light, since growth has stabilised compared to 2004 increasing significantly in 2006 when total market value reached 19.8 billion Euros.
Business intelligence The business intelligence market in 2006 consolidated its growth trend compared to the previous year having gone up 5.7% for a total value of 405 million Euros.
The advantages that mobile technology brings, from a business innovation and process management perspective, are clearly set out in the “Rapporto Mobile & Wireless Business” from the Osservatorio sul Mobile & Wireless Business promoted by Aitech-Assinform in association with the School of Management at the Politecnico di Milano, which reviews how this technology has been applied in the main business sectors in Italy.
B2c eCommerce in Italy The research conducted by the “Netcomm - School of Management of the Politecnico di Milano B2c Observatory” shows that the B2c eCommerce value in Italy, (i.e. the sale of goods and services via the Internet from Italian websites to end consumers) exceeded 4 billion Euros in 2006, thanks to a growth rate that since 2000 has always been higher than 40% per year, with peaks at over 60% and 70% in 2003 and 2004.
ICT spending in major sectors ICT spending has returned to growth in nearly all the major sectors of the economy, the only exceptions being Central Public Administration (down 1.4%) and telecommunications and media (down 0.3%), which showed the greatest growth of any sector in 2005, and has been the most important driver of growth in the IT sector over the last 5 years (tab. 8). The sectors showing greater than average growth have been Utilities (up 2.8%), banking (up 1.7%) and distribution (up 2.1%).
