The world ICT market
For the second year in a row, ICT spending and investments grew at a faster speed than the world economy, widening the gap between their respective growth rates. The difference went from 0.8 points in 2004 to 1.8 points last year.

The world telecommunications market

The world telecommunications market exceeded, in the course of the year 2005, the value of 1,500 billion dollars (fig. 4) recording a nice growth (+6.5%), supported both by the behavior of the equipment sector (+8.6%) and of the services sector (+6%).

The world IT market
The IT market in 2005 consolidates the positive cycle started in 2003, after the crisis that hit the sector at the beginning of the new millennium. We are dealing with a market characterized, in general, by a certain periodicity, with discontinuous growth rates and with results closely correlated with the behavior of the main economies, with the availability of innovative technologies and with the growth of the number of users.

The Telecommunications market in Europe

As it happened in the rest of the world, the year 2005 was a positive period for the market also in Europe, characterized by a continuous evolution of services, both in fixed and mobile networks. The telecommunications market in Europe keeps expanding, recording in 2005 a growth rate of +5%, which raises the overall value to 433 billion euros (fig. 13).

The IT market in Europe

Despite the fact that the macroeconomic context in Europe is not very positive, the IT market grows more than the preceding year (+3.5 % against 2.6% in 2004) and reaches a value of about 317 billion euros, close to that of the United States (fig. 16).

The ICT market in Italy
Since at least three years, the ICT market in Italy has been characterized by a strong gap between the restrained behavior of the IT sector and the more positive one of the telecommunications sector. The year 2005 is no exception: the aggregate market grows 2.3% (against 1.5% in 2004) but, while telecommunications record a growth of 3.0%, IT only grows 0.9% (after two years of negative variations).

The Telecommunications market in Italy

The telecommunications market grows 3% in 2005, compared to +2.4%, as recorded in the previous year. The two components, fixed and mobile telephony, contribute almost in equal amounts to such growth: today the gap between the two segments is at its historical minimum, compared to its behavior in the preceding years (fig. 22).

The IT market in Italy
Despite the growth recorded in 2005, confirming the first weak signs of an upturn that we already noticed in 2004, the Italian IT market is unable to compensate the gap it has accumulated with the main industrialized countries. These countries, in fact, established behaviors that are more positive, confirming a trend in effect since 4 years.

ICT spending in the main economic sectors
In the present edition of the Assinform Report we are applying an important modification to the analysis of ICT Spending by sector of economic activity. This has been done in order to afford a better reading of the business requirements and ICT investments of enterprises with a user role.
